Barna Square is a new social housing development in Rathcoole, Newtownabbey, delivering 22 apartments as part of the wider regeneration of the area.
The project forms part of a long-term initiative to replace outdated housing stock with modern, high-performance homes designed to improve living standards within the local community.
The reinforced concrete structure included multiple balcony and slab edge connections where thermal bridging needed to be reduced without compromising structural performance.

Egcobox® Thermal Break Connectors
SDG supplied Egcobox® thermal break connectors throughout the structure to provide thermal separation between the internal floor slabs and external balcony elements, helping reduce thermal bridging while maintaining the structural integrity of the connections.
Egcobox® elements were produced to order and supplied directly to site with short lead times. The bespoke cantilever connectors were designed in line with the specific static and geometrical requirements of the project, helping support the design team’s technical requirements throughout the construction process.
A range of reinforcement systems were also required, including column formers, punching shear reinforcement and thermal break plates.

The specialist reinforcement and thermal connection solutions helped the project team meet the complex design requirements of the structure while simplifying installation on site through the use of prefabricated systems.
The incorporation of thermal break connectors prevents thermal bridging between cantilevered components, contributing towards the overall energy efficiency performance of the building.
The completed Barna Square development will provide 22 modern social housing apartments as part of the ongoing regeneration of Rathcoole, Newtownabbey.
