PROJECT SUMMARY

SDG recently played a pivotal role in the replacement of two bridge structures at Dromore Park by supplying bridge bearings. Collaborating with EF Engineering and Greg Seeley Consulting Ltd, SDG supplied Calenberg Ciparall® sliding bearings for this project.

The replacement involved demolishing the unsafe existing bridges and constructing new compliant structures, complete with associated raised boardwalks.

THE CHALLENGE

The primary challenge in this project was the replacement of two deteriorating wooden bridges that had become unsafe for public use. The new bridges needed to provide enhanced structural resilience and durability, ensuring they could withstand the dynamic forces and stresses typical of such structures.

Additionally, maintaining accessibility during construction and ensuring minimal disruption to park visitors posed significant logistical challenges.

OUR SOLUTION

To address these challenges, SDG provided Calenberg Ciparall® sliding bearings, a sophisticated bearing solution designed for areas requiring point-floating, low-constraint horizontal displacement, and a permanently elastic, articulated connecting element. These bearings feature elastomer layers with vulcanised reinforcement and a PTFE-coated sliding plate made of glass-fibre reinforced composite (GRP). The Ciparall® sliding bearings were chosen for their ability to independently manage sliding and deformation, which is crucial for the structural integrity and longevity of the new bridges.

By utilising these advanced bearings, the new bridge structures at Dromore Park are equipped to handle the dynamic loads and environmental stresses, ensuring a stable and durable connection.

THE RESULTS

The implementation of the Calenberg Ciparall® sliding bearings has significantly improved the structural resilience and lifespan of the new bridges compared to the previous wooden structures. The bridges now exhibit enhanced capability to withstand dynamic forces, ensuring long-term stability and durability. This successful project not only provided safer and more reliable footbridges for the public but also demonstrated SDG’s commitment to delivering innovative and effective engineering solutions.

The new bridges, with their raised boardwalks and robust construction, now serve as a model for future infrastructure projects within the region. This project highlights SDG’s expertise and the crucial role of high-quality bearings in ensuring the success and longevity of engineering structures.
