The Carrigtwohill 38kV Substation project showcases how modern precast construction is helping transform the delivery of critical infrastructure.
Working in collaboration with ESB Networks, the ESB Engineering and Major Projects team and TLI Group, Banagher Precast Concrete manufactured and supplied a precision-engineered precast basement system for the new substation development.
Electrical infrastructure projects demand robust below-ground structures capable of meeting strict quality and dimensional tolerances while maintaining demanding construction programmes.
Banagher Precast Concrete required a connection solution that complemented the speed of the precast installation while allowing rapid assembly, accurate positioning and immediate progression of the works.

SDG supplied BT Innovation Turnbuckle connection systems to support the installation of the precast basement units.
The dry mechanical connection system provides a simple and efficient method of connecting precast concrete elements without the need for specialist tools or wet connection methods. Once installed, the connections can be loaded immediately, eliminating curing times and helping maintain installation momentum throughout the project.
Used alongside Banagher’s precision-manufactured FastBase® solution, the turnbuckle system supported fast and accurate installation while helping deliver the project’s ambitious four-day construction programme.
The completed Carrigtwohill 38kV Substation basement demonstrates how off-site manufacturing and modern precast connection technology can significantly reduce construction programmes for critical infrastructure.
The project provides an excellent example of how innovative precast construction methods, supported by modern connection technology, are helping precast manufacturers and contractors deliver faster, safer and more sustainable infrastructure projects.
