SDG alongside our long-standing partner, Max Frank Group have helped to design and engineer over 11 floors of Shearail® for GRAHAM, on the long-awaited LIV Student accommodation project.
Shearail® are used to increase the shear resistance of a slab, and safety transfers the shear load from the slab to the column.
The LIV Student complex located in Belfast city centre next to the new University of Ulster development, will contain 576 rooms with en-suite facilities over the 11 stories, along with shared communal areas, retail units and ground floor car parking.
Ground works began on the £35.9m scheme back in July 2019 with enabling contractor J&S McKee. SDG also liaised closely with formwork contractor M.R. Concrete, to design and supply Recostal Starter Packs along with our range of concrete accessories.
The weight of a concrete slab bearing onto a column, results in a concentrated load around the column connection which induces a shear stress. Punching shear failure is a brittle type failure which occurs at the flat-slab column junction, it results in the failure of reinforced concrete slabs subjected to high localised forces.
Max Frank Shearail® increases the shear resistance of a slab, and safety transfers the shear load from the slab to the column. Shearail® is EC2 and BS 8110 compliant, enabling site work to be carried out far more effectively than traditional loose links. As a pre-fabricated system, Shearail® is designed to increase construction speed, improve build quality and reduce dependency on skilled labour – significantly reducing on-site costs.
SDG working with Todd Architects designed and supplied a unique jointing system of acoustic ceilings expertly installed by Castle Ceilings.
SDG are the supply partner of Bekaert Murfor Compact, which was used to reinforce the external masonry. Used by MG Construction Murfor Compact offered a fast, simple and economical way of reinforcing masonry walls.
SDG working alongside Doran Consulting from design stage right through to advising the construction team on site reference installation best practice for bridge bearings at this Belfast project.
At SDG our knowledge of the impact of the correct acoustics in different environments grows it is no surprise that the education sector is one area where you can’t afford to be complacent.
Through the use of the BT turnbuckle on these LIDL store projects it has been possible to reduce the temporary bracing, increase safety and shorten the assembly time for the precast wall elements , it ticks all our the boxes. We are excited to implement it in our future projects.

I spoke to Ciaran Donnelly and after a few subsequent drawings emailed back and forth we agreed on the detail. SDG had the assembly on site within 3 days and saved us a lot of time on site with cutting and welding. We were able to lower the assembly into place in one piece with no concerns. I would most definitely engage in this service again.
