PROJECT SUMMARY

We worked with Doran Consulting from design stage right through to advising the construction team on site reference installation best practice.

SDG/Gumba specified the project from outset so had priced for all main contractors tendering the works and were successful in securing the order when John Grahams were awarded the contract.

SDG working alongside Doran Consulting from design stage right through to advising the construction team on site reference installation best practice for bridge bearings at this Belfast project.

THE CHALLENGE

Doran Consulting sent us the necessary technical information in terms of loadings, rotations, deck span and movements.

From this we proposed the best product for the specific application.

OUR SOLUTION

As there were three different types as follows, we supplied Gumba Reinforced Elastomeric Bearings Type B (1).

  • Type 1: Free to move in both the Longitudinal and Transverse Direction
  • Type 2: Restrained in Transverse Direction
  • Type 3: Restrained in both Transverse and Longitudinal direction

The Type 3 bearings providing restrain in both horizontal directions will be placed on the central pier. The Type 2 bearing providing restraint in the transverse direction will be placed on the abutment and end pier.

We also supplied the steel tapered plates to equalise the slope on the superstructure to ensure the bearings were in a horizontal position when installed.

SDG’s knowledge and experience along with site visits before and after installation was invaluable to the main contractor. We worked together in partnership to ensure all works were in accordance with design and manufacturers installation process.

A full set of drawings and design calculations were sent for approval to ensure all was in accordance with design parameters. This ensured that there were no issues with site specific dimensions or installation.

THE RESULTS

A bridge bearing is a component of a bridge which typically provides a resting surface between bridge piers and the bridge deck. The purpose of a bearing is to allow controlled movement and thereby reduce the stresses involved.

All GUMBA bridge bearings are in accordance with EN1337-3 regulations (CE certified) and are 100% made in Germany hence are precision engineering to the highest standards.
