WICKLOW BASEMENT – SELF BUILD KOSTER WATERPROOFING

Philip required specialist design advice on his self-build ICF (Insulated concrete formwork) based in the beautiful Glendalough area, deep in the Wicklow mountains.
Philip contacted SDG’s technical experts based on a recommendation from his ICF manufacturer, Amvic Building Solutions.
With modern builds, we see more and more designs opt to make better use of land by incorporating a retaining side or sides around the structure. This of course comes with its challenges, such as ensuring water tightness to protect the structure and its inhabitants from water ingress.
Each waterproofing situation is different, and requires a bespoke approach to waterproofing design, based on ground conditions, use of structure classification, and individual project requirements. With this project complete security of external system was required, along with a well-defined application process.
We proposed the use of Koster Waterproofing Deuxan 2C system, which is a cold applied, BBA approved, crack bridging liquid waterproofing system. Deuxan 2C offers full resistance against pressurised ground water and works to bridge cracks in concrete up to 2mm. Deuxan 2C is specifically suited to complex details such as pipe penetrations, inner and outer corners, and wall-floor junctions.
Due to its two-coat liquid applied application, the system cures to form a fully seamless membrane without joints. As joints failure is the most common form of waterproofing failure, Deuxan designs around this failure point.
The proposal was carried out as per specification, by both client and sub-contractor with both commenting regarding the ease of use, and robustness of Koster Deuxan 2C. SDG supplied a full suite of ancillary products, such as integral waterstops, detailing products such as Koster NB1, and Repair Mortar Plus.
The complete structure was protected using Delta Geo Drain Quattro with its innovative slip membrane designed to aid ground settlement on top of providing excellent mechanical protection and drainage.
