International Women in Engineering Day: Inspiring Future Female Engineers
SDG Sponsors Design ID’s Event Celebrating International Women in Engineering Day 2023, Inspiring Future Female Engineers
In a bid to encourage more women to pursue careers in engineering and construction, SDG proudly sponsored Design ID’s event marking International Women in Engineering Day on Wednesday 21st June.
Design ID are a dynamic Civil and Structural Engineering practice with studios in Hillsborough and London, known for their flexible and pro-active approach towards working with architects, artists, designers, developers, and contractors.
The event, held at Design ID’s new offices in Hillsborough, saw the participation of 80 enthusiastic female students from various schools in the locality. The workshop aimed to provide an interactive and enjoyable platform for young students to learn about the diverse opportunities and rewarding prospects within the fields of engineering and construction.
The pupils quizzed Design ID’s female engineers on their day-to-day role and Louise Skeath, CEO of SDG, provided insight into the construction industry, sharing her personal experience and offering inspiration with stories of perseverance and success.
The students tried their hand at building the strongest bridge made from paper and tested out Design ID’s new bridge kit, provided by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) – a 13m long A frame bridge.
The participants left the event with a new perspective on a career in STEM, with 50% of the students stating that they would consider a career in engineering as a result. Given that the latest figures released in 2021 stated 16.5% of engineers were female it’s encouraging to see the impact of events such as these.
