PROJECT SUMMARY: ACOUSTIC CEILINGS

The Castleblayney Town Library project, initiated by Monaghan County Council, was undertaken in 2018, this project involved the extension and refurbishment of the Hope Castle Gate Lodge, a protected structure dating back to the 1860s.

The project aimed to create a modern, 21st-century public library within the historic framework, blending traditional architecture with contemporary design to serve the community of Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan.

THE CHALLENGE

The refurbishment of Castleblayney Town Library posed multiple challenges. Firstly, working within the constraints of a protected structure required meticulous planning and execution to preserve the building’s historical integrity while accommodating modern functionality.

Acoustically, designing a library space demanded a delicate balance. Libraries, by nature, require quiet environments conducive to study and reading. Achieving optimal room acoustics was paramount to reducing noise, controlling reverb time, and ensuring a pleasant auditory environment for users. The challenge was to incorporate a solution that would meet these needs without compromising the architectural aesthetics or historical significance of the building.

OUR SOLUTION

SDG addressed these challenges by supplying Vogl Fuge Perforated Acoustic boards which were installed in the library’s ceiling. This Acoustic ceilings solution was chosen for its ability to significantly improve room acoustics through sound absorption, effectively reducing noise levels and controlling reverb time. The installation process was carefully managed to complement the building’s historical and aesthetic value, integrating seamlessly with the modern extension and the original structure’s architectural elements.

Technical support from SDG was instrumental in achieving this balance. The team worked closely with the sub-contractor to ensure that the acoustic ceilings would meet both the functional and aesthetic requirements of the project. Through a collaborative effort, an acoustic solution was supplied, in the form of Vogl Fuge Acoustic Design Panel perforation pattern 8/15/20R, known for its high sound absorption coefficient, pleasing aesthetics and non-combustible properties.

THE RESULTS

The installation of SDG’s Vogl Fuge Acoustic Ceilings in the Castleblayney Town Library has resulted in a space that is not only visually stunning but also acoustically optimised. The library now offers a quiet, comfortable environment for reading and study, enhancing the user experience for the community. The project’s completion has seen the transformation of a historic structure into a state-of-the-art facility.

The successful refurbishment and extension of the Castleblayney Town Library stands as a testament to the quality of SDG’s acoustic solutions from supply partner Vogl and their commitment to supporting clients with extensive acoustic expertise.
